This Ain’t Your Fathers United Parcel Service

UPS has been dominating the headlines recently as they just confirmed they will be the first delivery company with FAA approval to deliver via Drone. The drones are coming and before you put on that foil helmet on and start planning the downfall of Skynet, hear me out. This is definitely a good move not only by UPS but for delivery in general.

We just hit a big milestone of how we view delivery. Of course, our fat-asses got lazier but the delivery industry just benefited in a big way. UPS is not being the frontier of Drone Delivery, giving them bigger capabilities, paving the way for other companies, and cutting down on manned deliveries. Look, before you yell in a South Park voice that the drones “Took yer jobs!” we’ve been automating since the beginning of time. This was a remarkable step in not only aviation, but for consumer behavior, and packaged delivery in general. Life is only becoming more convenient and allowing us extra time to write dumb fucking shit like this. I digress, this is about UPS and what they are doing to innovate.

Look for the past 5 or so years, delivery companies like DHL, FedEx, and UPS have been nervous. Competition, mainly from Amazon and Walmart have been peeling away at the bottom line of these cornerstone companies for a little while now. Any win is a big win for these companies, and it just so happens that they had one of the biggest wins ever in recent years. Now, FedEx and DHL can look at the FAA confirmation for UPS as a bad thing, but really they should see the GIANT silver lining. They can do the same thing and get right in bed, in the same market with UPS like the good ole days. Although UPS definitely just got a leg up, the two ginormous companies are not too far behind. UPS is paving the way so that FedEx and DHL can have a nice drive following them.

UPS still has problems but they HAVE to be happy about this news. They are getting a giant opportunity to be the front runners of a new medium of delivery. They’ll be able to gain more customers and ultimately more traction and market share in the delivery industry. They strategized and ended up winning out against stiff competition so my hat is off to them.

A good company, with a now much brighter future is among us. It’s like the ugly girl that took her glasses off at prom and then everyone’s like “you know what? I’d totally bang Susan.” UPS is finding ways to reinvent themselves and that will only help moving forward and controlling the market share they have. My thumbs are up for them. Let’s see who’s next with Drone Delivery, should be a fun fight to watch.

Anyway, that’s my take on it. Until next time.
